Food Trails Food for the Taste Buds 2008-07-11T00:40:12Z WordPress http://www.foodtrails.org/feed/atom/ Errol Goff http://www.foodtrails.org <![CDATA[“FOOD AND YOUR HEALTH”]]> http://www.foodtrails.org/?p=73 2008-07-11T00:40:12Z 2008-07-11T00:40:12Z “Food as Medicine”?. ( Part 2 )

Health is a large word.It embraces not the body only, but the mind and spirit as well.

We all need calcium rich foods in our diets to keep our bones strong.

This is especially true for women under 30:that’s the crucial time they build their calcium stores for later life.

Less understood is which foods we should eat.

Many nutritional guidelines recommend dairy products as a rich calcium source.Unfortunately not everyone is able to tolerate dairy food and there has been doubt that taking calcium in this way offers any significant advantage.

Around the world, many populations have little or no dairy foods and yet have healthy bones and few fractures. There have also been studies - The Nurse study of 77,000 women which found no evidence that women who consumed a lot of dairy products had stronger bones.

If anything those individuals seemed to be more at risk. How our body manage calcium is complicated. For example, while dairy products have lots of calcium they also contain lots of protein, which may leach the calcium back out of the bones.

At present the best advice is to eat a wide range of foods that are calcium rich.

There are many non-dairy foods fortified with calcium like tofu and some orange juices.Eating canned fish with soft bones, green leafy vegetables, almonds, cereals and legumes can all help boost your non dairy calcium intake.

Muscles Pain and Fitness in old Age! lets talk about Fitness.
Most people look back fondly on their early adults years.Their bodies were very forgiving and their lives weren’t usually weight down by responsibility. They’d bounce back quickly from late nights and if injured the healing seemed quick and uncomplicated.Fast-forward ten years or more and things change.
The bounce becomes more like a slow inflating baloon and the injury recovery is no longer swift or certain. Yet many people’s expectations haven’t changed:if hurt, they want and often expect the same results from care they had experienced decades earlier.
Sadly that isn’t going to happen because they are older and age strongly influences healing time.I used to play tennis but stopped as it was troubling my shoulder.I haven’t done anything about it because I thought it was just part of getting 0ld’.
Often simple, treatable injuries are mistakenly put down to advancing years. And rather than seeking care many middle aged or older people start to place unnecessary limits on their life style and activity. Usually this isn’t required as the injuries aren’t due to old age. Most are strains and sprains and mechanical problems to do with poor movement, overuse or not warming up or cooling down properly. Sometimes there might be a small injury from a fall or Slip.
The good news is that with appropriate care and advice most of these problems will settle and can return to your chose activity. So if you feel it is the number of candles on your cake that is affecting your game then get a opinion.
The last thing you want to do is to hang up your boots, bat, clubs or rake before you have to. Who knows with a ‘Tune-up’ your game might improve. If you have issues with pain ask your Doctor for their advice;there are a number of options that may help you switch off and better manage the unwanted discomfort.
As we age exercise, nutrition are our main factor. As does having reasonable yet positive expectation for care if or when we injure ourselves.
The goal for care is to work naturally with the ‘BODY’,encourage its healing powers and then assist ourselves to heal.

Could your neck be the fault?.

Sometimes it is when the chiropractor ‘puts their finger’ on the spot do people realize that their neck may be the cause of their mid and upper back pain.

The fact that you can feel pain in other places from the actual cause - referred pain is well understood. What is less known, and the reason for many wrong diagnoses,is that the spine is a great mimic - a hidden source of many bodily aches and pains.

The lower part of the neck has a rich nerve supply and any spinal irritation can cause a confusing array of symptoms such as;local neck pain, muscle or joint discomfort felt into the chest, across the mid and upper back, and pains and pins and needles down one or both arms.

The technical name for these particular ‘neck’ caused ‘mid back’ symptoms is Cervicogenic Dorsalgia.Spinal experts belive neck problems are responsible for almost seven out of ten people who suffer from mid and upper back pain.

Diagnosis may be difficult because the symptoms can vary. For instance pain in the mid back can be well-localized or spread out. Some might say it feels like a cramp or burning tense or tired while others describe their pain as deep ache. Some people may experience only mild or even no neck symptoms at all. Others may have normal range of neck motion yet find certain movements can trigger stabbing pain between the shoulder blades, chest or arms.

A comprehensive chiropractic spinal examination is essential to identify these subtle spinal problems - requires years of practice and skill to feel the movement between such small bones.

The correct diagnosis is confirmed when the symptoms are relieved following a chiropractic spinal adjustment.Restoring normal spinal movement is the key to ‘fixing’ the problem.

Certain activities tend to cause mid-upper back problems.

Often the person with mid back pain has had work for long periods with their hands in front of the body and their body and their head thrust forward:computer work, ironing, cooking and dish washing.Often they may experience little or no discomfort while playing sport yet become quite sore whenever they adopt the head forward posture.

Chiropractic management includes exercise and posture advice.Sometimes the workplace may need to be modified, more frequent changes in work duties allowed,or certain exercises prescribed.Regular chiropractic care to ’support’ the weakened area may also be necessary.

“Food as Medicine”?. ( Part 1)

Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food’

The dividing line between food and medicine is often blurred. Many familiar food have other roles as preventative or healing agents.

In past times and other cultures this was accepted, but until recently the growth of technological medicine in developed countries has pushed the healing role of food into the background. Now it is enjoying renaissance.

The relationship between food and medicine is rarely obvious to the untrained eye,yet a large number of todays medicines are derived from sources more usually accepted as food.

The medical properties of plants have been recognised and put to use since the beginning of civilisation.Even today, herbal remedies are thought to make up as much as three-quarters of all the medicines taken around the world.Living plant cells have amino and fatty acids-the raw materials for building many compounds that contain medical properties.

Many modern drugs are made from plants more familiar as foods.Folk remedies are handed down from generation to generation and often involve food.

SOME WELL-KNOWN REMEDIES.

Ginger for nausea.

Cloves for toothache.

Peppermint for indigestion.

Honey for sore throat.

Prunes for constipation.

Carrots for night vision.

Citrus fruit and/or garlic for cold.

Parsley for bad breath.

World Health Organization studies, for example, show a clear connection between diet and heart disease in certain countries around the world.

Climate and geography play a large part in determining the diet and food remedies of a particular country and culture.

Other traditional remedies under scientific inspection include an infusion or ‘tea’ made of ten plant material that are commonly used in Chinese medicine to treat skin problems.Controlled clinical trials have shown that this ‘brew’ produces a short-term beneficial response in sufferers of ‘atopic eczema’.

Although interest in medicinal use of food is growing all the time and many applications may appear to be innovative, most cultures have long histories of food-based remedies. Some of these remedies have never dropped out of use,and many have now been scientifically proven to have beneficial health effects. These herbal applications now appear either in their natural state or in recognisable manufactured concentration of their active compounds, which are available as tablets, powders or creams just to name a few. (Ginger,Honey,Garlic).

Imagine suffering terrible pains with no signs of injury?.

What do you do with a faulty fire alarm? Simple, turn it off the power and wait until the alarm is repaired.

Now what do you do if the alarm bells are inside you; causing stiff muscles and leaving you exhausted?

That is what happens to people who have ‘fibromyalgia’ ( Sometimes called fibrositis) deal with: severe disabling aches and pains often without a mark of injury.

In years gone by people with fibromyalgia often had a hard time convincing others that their symptoms were real. That has changed since scientists have learnt more about the nervous system. It is now well understood that the symptoms of fibromyalgia-muscle and soft tissue discomfort, tiredness and stiffness-are common and possibly the major reason why some people in our community experience more pain than others. It is basically a faulty overly sensitive pain system that sends and amplifies all sorts of misleading messages about tissue all sorts of misleading, messages about tissue damage to the brain.

Sometimes the pain message might only effect one part of your body. For instance,an elbow or wrist might be affected. In other people it can affect the whole body and causes headaches, sleep disturbances, bowel problems and disturbed concentration.

It’s a worldwide condition and may vary in severity form very mild and occasional to severe and persistent.

The symptoms are often vague and share common features with other illnesses like chronic fatigue syndrome.

Unfortunately there is no agreed test to diagnose Fibromyalgia.Instead the diagnose is based on the description of the symptoms, ruling out other known problems, and finding areas of unusual tenderness on the body.

There is no specific treatment but there are a number of approaches that may help.

Light regular exercise-starting with simple walking-and attention to leading a healthy lifestyle i.e.regular meals, healthy simple diet, fresh air,and having an established bed/sleep routine is also very important.Sometimes certain medication may be of assistance.

If you have issues with pain ask your Doctor for their advice;there are a number of options that may help you switch off and better manage the unwanted discomfort.

People are often busy and when faced with a health problem they usually want things fixed straight away.Unfortunately what we want, and how our bodies actually work is often at odds.

Healing Body Sets The Pace

Apart from the crisis times of physical trauma or a acute infection,or body usually does things gradually.Following a strange underlying logic where little action can sometimes set in motion big changes.

Take for instance a sore toe.If it persists you will stand and walk differently.Over time the opposite hip becomes sore, usually worse in bed and sleep becomes disturbed. You get tired, feel rundown and cold scores appear. Each of those symptoms could be treated in isolation but that approach doesn’t really get to the underlying cause.

Sorting out health issues takes time and the ability to step back and ask ‘what else is going on here?’ So apart from choosing appropriate care, your body sets the pace for healing, and that sometimes an opportunity to learn about patience.

A simple Chair exercise to combat slouching and Sitting straight Periods.

Too much sitting can cause posture problems and discomfort-basically we aren’t well suited to sit or be still for long periods. If your work duties don’t allow you to move around then try this easy posture retraining exercise.

While sitting slowly breath out and allow your body to slump to its maximum.

Then reverse the position slowly breathing in while you straighten up to sit as tall and as erect as posisible.

Repeat slowly and rhythmically six times.Complete this routine 3 to 5 times daily.

This exercise is straightforward and surprisingly effective so make it part of your daily ‘take care of myself’ routine.

A growing Child\'s Spine

In our western culture, good posture is considered very important.

For instance.in our words an honest person is known as ‘upright;yet if you are not then you are either ‘crooked’ or ’spineless’.It is unfortunate, but how you look may also influence how some people treat you.

Many parents are concerned about this, but only apply this knowledge to their child or teenager’s teeth-lots of time and effort go into getting an even smile-but there is less attention given to their child’s posture and how that child moves. This is shortsighted not only because of ‘appearance’,but also because untreated poor posture may cause future health problems and an increased risk of injury.School bags or sports may get blamed for the postural aches and pains rather than the underlying culprit.

How can a child’s bones be affected?

When a child uses their muscles, those muscles tug on the growing bones to guide and shape the development of their skeleton.

Without that appropriate stimulus, their bones will not become strong or correctly formed.Furthermore,if a child or teenager is inactive,or slouches for long periods of time, then their brain eventually believes that ‘faulty’ posture is actually ‘normal’.

Kid’s standing posture-what should you look for?

Firstly with children, check for symmetry-feet,knees,hips and shoulders should line up evenly.

Starting from the ground:

Do both feet, ankles and knees look the same?Do they point in a similar direction?Does one knee bend further backwards than the other?

Are the hips and shoulders level? Are the muscles on either side of the body the same size?Does one buttock, ribs or shoulder blade stick out more?

Are the shoulders drawn forward or the hands turned inwards? What is the position of the child’s head?Is it stuck forward, turned or tilted to one side?

Then look for balance and movement:

Can a child balance quietly on either leg without waving their arms or non-standing leg?Do they waddle when they walk,or appear awkward when they run?Can they bend or turn as far to left as they can to the right?Dose their spine look straight when they bend forward to touch their toe?

What if something doesn’t look right?

There is obviously a range of what is acceptable and the best starting place is with people who understand normal posture,Know what to look for,and what to do if some clinical care is required.

Ask your chiropractor.

Errol Goff http://www.foodtrails.org <![CDATA[Health Wise Handbags and Wallets.]]> http://www.foodtrails.org/?p=58 2008-05-20T02:32:23Z 2008-05-20T02:32:23Z Can Trigger Spinal Pain! Fashionable things attract more than a second glance.

Most people are careful when they lift or shift heavy loads.Unfortunately, the smaller loads can be just a troublesome and the result is needing Chiropractic care.

Briefcases, shoulder bags and backpacks can all cause health problems, especially when loaded up.Not surprising when it has been estimated that carrying as little as 10% of your body weight can upset your postural alignment.

Carrying a weight on one-side changes the natural rhythm of your upper and lower body. The unloaded side often tightens to counter the weight.

This Causes a spinal curvature and the smooth coordinated swinging of your arms and legs is replaced by a gait that is more awkward and rigid Muscles become tense while other parts of the spine lose their normal free movement.

Once you add a few items, even thin-strapped shoulder bags may cause injuries. The thin strap may cut into the neck and shoulder muscles causing pain, tenderness and tightness.Even smaller handbags, purses and wallets can cause postural mischief.Having to hold ATM cards, coins and personal identification have made these carry-alls evolve to become thicker.

Problems begin to arise when you want to keep your hands free-often the now bulky wallet ends up in the back pocket.Sitting down will then press the wallet into one of the buttock muscles. The person becomes propped up on one cheek and their spine curves, causing uneven muscle tension.

Prolonged pressure against the buttock may cause pain, tightness and even bruising.Hard pressure through the muscle can also irritate the sciatic nerve:you can end up with a sore bottom as well as a nagging ache and numbness that travel down your leg!

Tips to save your spine:

Empty any unnecessary items from your bag or wallet;

Place the wallet and mobile phone in the front pockets of the bag-saves you having to stretch;

select a briefcase or purse with a wide adjustable strap-long enough to place it over your head-to evenly distribute the load across the body;

Swap the carry side frequently;

Don’t sit or drive with a wallet in your back pocket.

Followers of fashion tend to be more concerned with the way something looks rather than the way it feels. That may be OK for a while, but it is generally wiser to listen to your body and perhaps ask your chiropractor for advice. After all is’s hard to be stylish when you’re wincing with pain!

We are ‘touch feely’ creatures. In fact our brains depend upon a certain level of stimulation that comes from having our skin touched and moved.

This has been shown in many studies.Therapeutic massage has been found to be helpful for those who have mild depression.Infants who receive regular baby massages show more confidence and independence.

Nursing homes have found that having pets around with the elderly offer therapeutic benefits which has been attributed to physical contact-the petting of animal is good for both the ‘pattee’ and the ‘patter’.

There may be ‘different strokes for different folks’but everyone needs at least some level of physical contact to be healthy and happy.

That is one of the reasons people like Chiropractors and hands-on health professions.

Massage and pampering to treat your mind body and soul, take time out to relieve your muscular aches and tension, smoothe away stress and anxiety, increase energy and performance.

Revitalise your health and wellbeing.A massage promotes a deep sense of relaxation, and helps your body to heal itself naturally. It feels nurturing and comforting, and restores balance and harmony to mind and body.

Spondylolisthesis occurs when a small break in a spinal bone allows the front part of the vertebra to separate and slip foward, literally a ‘broken’ or ‘fractured’ back.

About 7 in every 100 people have this defect in their back.It is commonly found in elite athletes (17 to 35%) and Eskimos (40%).Most are detected by chance-seen on x-rays taken for an unrelated problem.A few years ago any person whose x-rays showed this abnormality was treated as if they were fragile.Sport, physical work or military service was forbidden.

This advice was terribly wrong and some people were needlessly turned inti semi-invalids.In some cases the deformity is entirely symptomless. The fact is plain x-rays simply do not tell whether a person’s spine is mechanically sound.

What causes a spondylolisthesis?.

Spondylolisthesis can start from either under-development of the joints that guide the motion of the spine (facets),or a section of the bone at the back of the vertebra. This usually occurs in the low back region, mainly at the level of the fifth lumbar vertebra. The commonly accepted reason that a spondylolisthesis develops is thought to be stress fractures caused by childhood falls onto the bottom.

In the case of Eskimos, being carried upright in papooses as babies. These activities apply too much weight or force onto the immature spinal bones.

This type of spondylolisthesis is usually found in adolescent or young adult.Spondylolisthesis can be also due to osteoarthritic degenaration (wear and tear) of the Facet joints-this is often seen in people over the 50 years of age.

Quite often the first sign that a person may have an underlying problem is that they feel a deep, dull aching type pain, generally localised to to the low back. The person may complain of pain particularly after sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time. The person may also complain of general low back pain and possibly shooting sciatic pain down the buttock and or leg.On assessment of person with a spondylolisthesis, a ’step’ can quite often been seen or felt at the area of the spondylolisthesis.

The pain or discomfort felt by the person is relative to the degree of displacement of the vertebra. As it can be seen, the further displaced forward the vertebra becomes the more stress and strain is places on the surrounding structures.

It should also be noted that the pain does not come for spondylolsthesis itself, but rather from the stress placed on the structures around it (muscles, ligaments and joints),required to work more to hold the low back in it;s correct alignment.Occasionally if a spondylolsthesis progresses far enough it can affect the nerves in the area.

Treatment.

Is surgery or a special brace needed?.For the vast majority, certainly not! Chiropractic spinal adjustments are excellent for managing the mechanical problems that may come from the spondylolisthesis’ sway-back posture.

The key factors for a healthy working spine are strength, stability and flexibility. You cant measure those things on a plain x-rays.What you see on x-ray has to be related to what you find during a ‘hands on’chiropractic examination.

The best form of treatment for spondylolisthesis is through conservative mangement and monitoring via chropractic adjustments, soft tissue work and muscle strengthening excises to stabilise the area.In particular abdominal and spinal muscels should be strengthened as these are the core stabilising muscels of the spine.

Studies have shown that chiropractic therapy, when applied to patients with spondylolisthesis, resulted in 80% of patients having favourable outcomes and rapid symptomatic pain relief.

Your chiropractor will not adjust the segment that has slipped foward itself but will adjust areas around it to ensure proper joint function.

Curent medical treatment of spondylolisthesis consists of anti-inflammatory drugs and surgery. These are are quite invasive treatments and have also been shown to be less effective, have shorter lasting effects, and be riskier than consertvative chiropractic management. The medical treatment regime should only be viewed as a last resort if the spondylolisthesis is causing severe pain, neurological compromise or if it is progressing and slipping further. In all the collective years of practitioners in this practice, there has only been one case where a spondylolisthesis needed surgery.
